The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – In the last nine months, 76 restaurants have joined the Returnable Container Campaign introduced by nature association, Terra Nostra, whose goal is to reduce disposable containers used by restaurants.

The director of Terra Nostra, Nydia Rodriguez, said that containers are a single use waste product that creates more pollution than any other aspect of the restaurant industry.

Thus the idea is to promote the use of reusable food packaging, such as glass containers.

According to information from the organization, this type of packaging can be reused up to 50 times before being recycled which reduces solid waste pollution by 95 percent.

So far of the 76 restaurants that have joined the initiative, 80 percent have taken action to reduce or eliminate the use of disposable packaging.

Rodriguez said the campaign also asks people to change their habits and take reusable packaging for leftovers when dining out.

Rodriguez did not specify the location of the restaurants or their names. (Amelia Rueda)
