The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – In a surprising last minute vote counting the political scientist and historian Luis Guillermo Solis won the Citizen Action Party convention with a difference of 72 votes over Juan Carlos Mendoza.
After completing the counting of 100% of the polls, Solis scored 8,260 votes, representing 35.53%, while Mendoza scored 8,188 votes for a 35.22%.
Further back was the presidential candidate Epsy Campbell with 24.96%, whereas Ronald Solis got 996 votes for a 4.28%.
Although the count represents the total voting of the convention held this Sunday, PAC authorities do not consider these numbers as final results until a manual count is performed in the presence of all district attorneys.
In total, PAC convention hosted 23,521 people who cast their votes, including 274 null and blank votes.
At a press conference held on Monday at 3:30 pm, Solis was pleased but cautious and claimed to consider himself “a provisional candidate”, since despite having a 100% of the polling stations, he said it is necessary to wait for the manual count of the votes.
Solis pointed out that the victory was due to “the beautiful magic of citizen action,” which motivates “people to act and get out there to vote”.
In regards to participation, Solis seemed satisfied by the fact that it maintained a similar level to the previous convention and stressed that it was an organized process “against the clock” and a very austere campaign.
