    Laura Chinchilla welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan to Costa Rica on Sunday, which is the Chinese president’s first official visit to the Central American country. Costa Rica is the only country in the region that has diplomatic ties with Beijing.

    China has “donated” billions of dollars to Costa Rica as a reward for severing its ties with Taiwan. Laura Chinchilla invitation was extended just mere days after President Obama visited Costa Rica earlier this month.

    Deputy Foreign Minister of Costa Rica, Carlos Roverssi, said that the central themes of the meeting with the Chinese authorities will be cooperation and infrastructure.

    This is the first American tour of Xi Jinping, who will also visit Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and the United States.

    The Chinese President come to Costa Rica on Sunday evening and stared official activities on Monday, including a meeting with the president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, after which they signed several bilateral agreements.

    The Costa Rican government to Xi Jinping will present proposals on cooperation in areas such as clean energy, education and innovation, and sport.

    The Chinese president visited the Legislative Assembly on Monday and got the keys to the city of San Jose.

    Xi Jinping and his wife made a private visit to a Costa Rican family dedicated to agriculture.

    On Monday night, Chinchilla offered a state dinner in honor of her Chinese counterpart at the National Theatre. Xi Jinping left Costa Rica on Tuesday morning.

    The government declared a day off on Monday for public sector employees in San Jose, in order to facilitate transport operations and Asian security around the president.
