A Canadian naval vessel, the HMCS Whitehorse, in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy participated in a large drug raid last month on the Pacific high seas off the coast of Costa Rica. Information on the operation was only recently release because the investigation was ongoing.
The vessels in the joint operation intercepted more than 5,200 kilograms of cocaine in international waters from a coastal freighter. The freighter began ejecting bales overboard after spotting the investigating vessels.
The joint vessel operation lasted three days. No additional drugs were found on board and the full 5,200 kilograms were retrieved from the ocean.
Canada’s is contributing in a multi-national effort to stem drug transits along the Central America coasts in the Caribbean Sea, and Pacific Ocean.
