    Latin America News – 48 confirmed dead and untold numbers are missing in Guatemala, people fear aftershocks early Thursday.

    The search continues through the rubble and mass destruction for survivors and bodies continue after the magnitude 7.4 quake that struck Wednesday near Guatemala’s border with Mexico.

    The quake caused extensive damage over an very large area, with damage reported in almost all of Guatemala’s states and felt as far away as Mexico City, 600 miles (965 kilometers) northwest.

    The quake, which was approximately 20 miles deep, was centered 15 miles off the coastal town of Champerico and 100 miles southwest of Guatemala City.

    It is the strongest earthquake to hit Guatemala since a 1976 temblor that killed more than 22,000.

    Officials said at least 100 were missing were from San Marcos area, a farming community.

    More than 2,000 soldiers were deployed to help with the disaster. A plane had made at least two trips to carry relief teams to the area.
