The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – In the previous year, the Central Animal Rescue Zoo hosted 1,300 wild animals that were stolen from their habitats, but for 2013 this figure is almost double.
This year, the center received 2,199 wild animals requiring care because they were taken from their habitats or exposed to danger.
“It is difficult to estimate how many wild animals can be in Costa Ricans houses because we’ve had one person come in and leave 5 animals in a day,” said Guisella Arroyo, manager of the rescue.
This year 666 wild animals were killed by injuries from which they could not recover.
Animals that can found at the Zoo are the monkeys, parrots, macaws and turtles.
The Wildlife Act provides for penalties of one to three years in prison against a person who harms an animal. According to the regulations, harming an animal is defined as any action that hurts, apprehends, captures or kills wildlife.
