The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Regulatory Authority for Public Services (Aresep) has announced that their plan for families or businesses to use or install solar panels and sell the surplus energy generated will be ready in February.

According to the Dennis Melendez of Aresep they just need to establish fixed tariffs for interconnection and access, which were recently analyzed at a meeting on December 15; a decision will be made in mid-January.

All national electric companies said they are ready to cooperate with the program in January, except for the National Power and Light Company (CNFL), who requested more time to prepare, but they’re expected to start the program in February.

With this new methodology, if someone has installed solar panels and, for example, produces 20 megawatts per month but only consumes 8, they may sell the 12 remaining units to ICE at the current prevailing rates for the system to generate hydropower.

To participate in this program, solar harvesters must contact one of the following companies: Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), Administrative Board of the Municipal Electric Service Cartago (Jasec), Public Service Company Heredia (ESPH) Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL), Coopeguanacaste, Coopelesca, Coopesantos, Coopealfaro Ruiz.

Use of panels and generating energy from the sun can reduce the cost of electricity especially during the dry season when there’s usually a rise in prices. (Amelia Rueda)
