The beautiful small-town Montezuma, which is located in Puntarenas, in the Northwest of Costa Rica, was once a rather unknown fishing village, but today its image has changed.

Also known as โ€œMontefumaโ€, due to the high rates of Cannabis being consumed, visitors to the village will experience what a perfectly relaxed vacation can be like. Except for beautiful beaches, a choice of bars and small shops which sell souvenirs and a wide range of handmade jewelry, there are offers for yoga courses, horse riding, hikes to the Montezuma waterfalls and speed boat trips to different destinations.

Especially popular and recommended is the day trip to Isla Tortuga. Including the boat tour, a day at a dreamlike beach, a variety of food and drinks and even a snorkeling excursion, the price of around $40 is definitely worth it.

At night tourists are welcome have a drink in one of the bars, located directly next to the beach. Especially the local Cocktails, for example โ€œMontezuma beach,” are gorgeous and worth trying them! On the weekend you can principally party all night (with Ticos), but you will also get to know tourists from all over the world.

Places to stay overnight, especially cheap hostels or B&Bs are situated all over the village and are rarely booked up; looking for food you will easily find restaurants and small cafรฉs, also offering a range of international dishes and snacks.

So if youโ€™re willing to spend a laid-back weekend in Costa Rica come to Montezuma! The only disadvantage: buses from the Central Valley are scarce and long, but include a ferry ride across the bay where you can see dolphins and other wildlife.
