The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Three people were arrested this morning when they went Hermosa Beach in Garabito with 296 turtle eggs.
Subjects were identified with the last names Villalobos, Trejos and Espinoza. According to the deputy police chief, Oswaldo Rodriguez, officers were conducting preventive patrols along the beach when they located the men who carried eggs in different bags.
Since last July, dozens of olive ridley turtles have come to the beaches of Jaco and Hermosa to spawn. However, it’s often in places where the eggs are at high risk, such as where tourists place umbrellas or grills, high-traffic areas or easy access for poachers.
Because of this, law enforcement officers created their own nursery in Jacó to move the nests. This is a place where they protect the eggs for 50 days until the birth of the turtles.
In the case of the seizure this morning, the eggs could not be rescued, an official confirmed, so the Prosecutor ordered their destruction and they will be buried in the shelter of Punta Mala in Parrita.
