The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Costa Rica´s Hotel Industry does not want to lose its leadership in Central America, so in order to stay competitive it is seeking to establish an innovation and renewal plan to be implemented during the next 20 years.

The president of the Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH in Spanish), Ruben Pacheco, explained that this initiative was the main subject of study of the National Hotel Congress, which took place last Tuesday and Wednesday in San Jose and counted with the participation of about 200 industry representatives.

“We want to redefine ourselves because we feel the competition with other countries. There are several things that we have to redefine and determine how to innovate with a vision for the next 20 years,” said Pacheco.

He explained that the CCH asked President Laura Chinchilla to create a working group integrated by the Executive Competitiveness Commission, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), the private sector and the Central American Institute for Business Administration (INCAE).

The hotel sector wants this group to present in two months an action plan to strengthen the tourism industry and innovate their products. Also, they want to define a particular selective kind of tourism from which revenues can be distributed in rural areas and everywhere: at beaches, forests, etc., explained Pacheco.

CCH data indicates that Costa Rica is visited by over 2.1 million tourists each year. Pacheco insisted that Costa Rica should strengthen its supply and exploit new market niches such as tourism conferences and conventions, for which they hope to build a large convention center.

“We must not lose the leadership. We have unique capabilities to promote tourism that has new things in ecology and medical tourism for retirees,” said Pacheco. EFE
