If you are a potato lover then you cannot miss the First National Potato Fair, which will be held on August 11th – 12th, in Plaza Mayor, in front of the Ruins of Cartago.
The event is organized by the Costa Rican Chamber of Potato Producers with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cattle (MAG), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and the Municipality of Cartago.
During the fair attendees will have the chance to buy fresh and toast (processed) potatoes as well as enjoy a variety of culinary and cultural activities designed for family entertainment.
As a matter of fact, MAG has opened a contest to look for the best original potato-based recipes. The best three recipes will be awarded during the event.
On Sunday, August 12th, attendees will have the chance to enjoy, free of charge, the biggest potato hash ever made in Costa Rica. The dish will be prepared by the chefs of the National Institute of Training (INA) and it will be big enough to feed an estimate of 2000 people.
That same day, people will also have the opportunity to enjoy an open air concert.
The event will be held as part of the celebration of the National Potato Day and its goal is to promote potato consumption in the country and raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of this crop.
“We want consumers to learn to identify the national potato so they can always support us,” said Fabian Segura, President of the Chamber of Potato Producers.
The Chamber of Potato Producers gathers more than 1000 producers from all over the country, and it directly benefits about 5000 families.
