The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The Criminal Court of the First Judicial Circuit of San José found a lawyer named Salas Guevara guilty of three offenses of falsification. The woman, in her capacity as notary lawyer, made a series of false marriages for Costa Ricans with foreigners so that they could expedite their immigration cases.
According to the judgment 848-2013, in total about 31 people were charged. The lawyer was sentenced to 50 years in prison. However, she was acquitted of six offenses of falsifying were attributed to her.
She was also ordered to pay 1 million colones for each of the listed civilian victims, for a total of 5 million.
In January 2012, the attorney was convicted of these crimes, but in September of that same year she was released after a technicality in the case, which overturned the conviction.
However, the case was reopened for trial this year.
