Latin America News – The Mexican and Brazilian candidates for the post of World Trade Organization director-general made it past the first round in the selection process, but Costa Rica’s candidate was eliminated.
Mexico’s Herminio Blanco and Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo are still in the running to take over the post in September.
The candidates from New Zealand, South Korea and Indonesia also made the cut, while those from Costa Rica, Jordan, Ghana and Kenya were eliminated.
The 62-year-old Blanco said that being from Mexico, “an important bridge between the developing and developed countries,” his experience in negotiating free trade agreements with the United States and Europe, and knowledge of the public and private sectors bolstered his candidacy.
