Calero Island
The Costa Rica News (TCRN)-Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla said today that Nicaragua uses “false limits” to their advantage, both on land and at sea, and that Costa Rica will continue denouncing these “abuses” by appealing to international authorities.
Chinchilla said at a press conference that relations between Costa Rica and Nicaragua are under a lot of strain due to territorial disputes, since Nicaragua continues claiming to have rights over territories that belong to Costa Rica. In 2010 Costa Rica
denounced Nicaragua for invading a small Caribbean territory called Isla Calero. Recently, Costa Rica indicated that Nicaragua is offering oil concessions in the Pacific and Caribbean in areas that belong to Costa Rica. The Calero Island’s case is being studied by the International Court of Justice, which issued measures to prevent both countries from entering the disputed area.
“We are deeply concerned about the situation with Nicaragua”, said Chinchilla. Even though Costa Rica has maintained a respectful position, Nicaragua continues disrespecting the ICJ and the precautionary measures,” stated the president. Chinchilla said that a new lawsuit against Nicaragua might be presented regarding the oil concessions if Nicaragua does not accept the United Nations´ establishment of a temporary border line in that area. “We will not fail to act with firmness and determination in the face of repeated abuses by Nicaragua” concluded the president.
