Although Cinco de Mayo is primarily a Mexican and US celebration, there are some Central American countries that also celebrate Cinco de Mayo such as El Salvador and Guatemala, but in general it is not a Costa Rica celebration. However, if you look around metropolitan San Jose, you will find a few “Cinco” parties.
Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and many US states and communities. It celebrates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla.
The Mexican army was eventually defeated; the “Batalla de Puebla” came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves from any foreign intervention.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
