Authorities in Chile fined the world’s largest gold mining operators, a Canadian mining company, $ 16 million USD for environmental crimes.
Operations of Barrick Gold Corp were suspended work on the Pascua-Lama project from, until the company implement a new water treatment system that they had committed to building, to contain water contaminated by the process mining.
The trading of the shares of the Canadian company was temporarily suspended in New York and Toronto after a sell-off triggered by the decision.
Environmentalists criticized the ammount of the fine, the highest Chilean law allows, claiming that only a small fraction of the value of the total operation.
