Costa Rica Weather Delivering Heavy Rains in Caribbean and Central Valley

Costa Rica weather is always dynamic in the rain season. This past weekend the National Emergency Commission (CNE) issued an alert for the Caribbean province of Limón which received heavy rains and is expected to continue throughout this week.

According to forecasts, heavy thunderstorms are expected in the northern and southern Caribbean and will continuing throughout the week. The cause is a low-pressure system that will continue to soak the region, and will likely surpass the monthly average accumulation this week.

Increased rainfall also is expected in the Central Valley with west Alajuela already seeing above average accumulations.

Last week the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) reported that Costa Rica will experience the effects of an El Niño weather phenomenon beginning in July, which means less rainfall is expected for most of the country during this time.

Many areas of Guanacaste have already experienced drought-like conditions with a number of areas still rationing water.
