Time for Costa Rican Companies to Pay the Piper; Business Taxes Due in January

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – By January, active companies and foreign corporations with branches or agents in Costa Rica must pay income tax on legal employees, which is ¢201,700 and ¢100,850 for inactive businesses.

The amounts were established after defining the basic salary of an administrative assistant for the period 2015, an amount set at ¢403,400, which will be used as a parameter for determining various penalties established for the criminal code as well as taxes.

The Tax Law became effective in April 2012 and imposes a 50% annual salary tax for commercial companies, representatives of foreign legal entities and individual limited liability companies.

Meanwhile, companies that are registered but inactive must pay 25% of that base salary per year.

The duty must be paid by January next year to avoid late charges by the 31.

Non-payment of this tax will generate a late charge of 13.30% per annum. In addition, after February 1, any company that has not made the tax payment will be unable to register their documents and obtain digital certificates from the National Register.

The Bank of Costa Rica will continue to serve as the sole collecting agency of this tax, with the ability to pay in their offices or through their website. (El Financiero)
