Latin America news – Three and a half million+ Nicaraguans are ready to participate this Sunday in municipal elections.
Local news sources say that Sandinista are looking for total control of Nicaragua
Suspicions of fake candidacies started earlier this year, when the Sandinista controlled electoral council banned the opposition Christian Democratic Union (UDC) from participating in the polls.
In the previous elections held in 2008, the ruling party won 109 of the 153 municipalities, including the mayor of Managua, which is the main square of the country’s politics after the presidency and is controlled by the Sandinista for twelve years.
Election officials expect a turnout of between 70% and 75%.
Some 23,000 police and soldiers monitor the process.
Sandinista have been reported as having said they hope to win 95% of the municipalities, a victory that would consolidate President Daniel Ortega’s total control over Nicaragua.
Opposition states, the Sandinista Front already has more control than it did in the 80’s and they fear Ortega’s tightening grip on Nicaragua and what it means to the future of this important Central American country.
