    Former President of Costa Rica Acquitted in Corruption Case

    The former Costa Rican president and secretary general of the Organization of American States, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, was acquitted Friday in an appeal against the sentence of five years imprisonment that was imposed in 2011 by a case of aggravated corruption and diversion of public funds.

    Rodríguez, who was president of Costa Rica from 1998 to 2002, was acquitted of all penalties and liability, the Court of Criminal Finance had adjudged instigator of the crime of aggravated corruption, bribery in the form of improper.

    The case concerns bribes for French company Alcatel to win a million-dollar bid for the installation of a cellular phone network in the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) in 2001.
