The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The authorities in Costa Rica have found three airfields for helicopters on a farm on the Caribbean side, which authorities suspect belong to drug traffickers.

The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) reported that this is a farm of 300 acres in Limón, where in addition to the three heliports, officers found containers filled with fuel.

On site there is a house with some ammunition and officers also found containers with residues of chemicals like acetic acid suspected could have been used to process cocaine.

The authorities continue to research in the area and so far have no detainees. Investigations began a few weeks ago after neighbors alerted authorities of helicopter flights.

This is the third airfield Costa Rica authorities have discovered in recent weeks and it is possible that they are linked.

The first case occurred on 8 October in a jungle area near the border with Nicaragua, where police found a camp with a helipad, an all terrain vehicle, and weapons.

In all, they seized 17 AK-47 rifles, a rocket launcher, three pistols, three rifles M-16, various chargers, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The second case was on 3 November in the mountainous area of Pococí Asturias, in the province of Limón, where agents found a helipad and camp where they seized $48,000 in cash, five AK-47 rifles, a revolver, a pistol, and two Honduran passports.

The next day, police arrested two suspects: a Colombian helicopter technician named Ramirez Sanchez, and a Costa Rican named Vega Jiménez.

Authorities have said that the main hypothesis is that these camps were used for fuel reload helicopters transporting drugs, but do not rule out also have served as laboratories for processing cocaine. (EFE)
