Panama’s parliament is accelerating the process to revoke a controversial law allowing the sale of land in Latin America’s largest duty free zone.

Faced with violent protests in last week, the Panamanian government abandoned plans to sell state lands in the duty free zone of Colon to private companies.

During the protests 3 people died in the clashes.

Unions and residents say land sales to private companies in the duty free zone of Colon would generate job losses and falling wages.

The government had said that privatization would encourage development.

Following a debate on Sunday, the Assembly will discuss a final vote to repeal the law. over the weekend the intensity of the protests has quieted.
