The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Spanish construction group FCC has established its presence in Latin America with a new $34 million contract to remodel the Juan Santamaria International Airport which serves the Costa Rican capital.

The project, which is to be completed within a year and a half, will include construction of a hangar at the country’s main airport and other auxiliary facilities, the company said.

The hangar will be located 150 meters (490 feet) from the runway and have the capacity to house six Boeing 757-300 planes or other similar aircraft.

The airport in Alajuela, which provides services to airlines covering routes throughout the Americas and offers connections to Europe, is one of the fastest growing in the region in terms of passengers served, number of airlines, and cargo volume.

The project is part of the Costa Rican Public Works Ministry’s National Transportation Plan, which will entail an estimated investment outlay of $50 billion over the next 25 years.

FCC, which has operated in Costa Rica since 2004, has carried out different infrastructure projects throughout the nation.

Latin America accounts for 11.5 percent of the group’s business, most of which is focused on infrastructure development. (EFE)
