Same-sex couples will have the possibility of opting for a pension in the case that their spouse dies, called “survivor pension.” That was what the Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Department of Social Security resolved last Thursday night, to extend the coverage of invalidity, old age, and death (IVM) to homosexuals

The institution carried out respective judicial and economic studies to determine the viability of the expansion. The pension system of IVM provides for 1.4 million quotes, has 224 thousand pensioners, and their reserves amount to 1.9 trillion.

Two weeks ago, the Administrative Dispute Tribunal brought to trial the claim of lawyer Yashin Castrillo against the CCSS for preventing sexually diverse people from opting for IVM. The judge suggested to reconcile in the process, but the representative of CCSS did not accept the proposal, arguing risk of sustainability of the IVM pension system.

The authorities of the institution will give the details this Friday of when the agreement will be effective and how to carry out the process.

The president of the Diversity Movement, Marco Castillo, seemed satisfied and assured that it is a step towards the recognition of same-sex unions.
