The novel continues regarding the wage increases for the private sector. This Wednesday the Government of the Republic proposed an increase of 0.5% for regulated employees and 2% for domestic workers during the second semester of 2016.

Carlos Alvarado, head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), made the announcement, emphasizing the importance of domestic employees. “Domestic work is the lowest registered category of work in the country and has a 32% gap, which is why an increase of 2% has been proposed for those who perform this activity,” said Alvarado.

Last Monday, the business sector represented by Mesalles Luis of the Costa Rica Union of Chambers and Partners of the Private Business Sector (UCCAEP) proposed that there was no increase for that period.

This was something that bothered the trade union sector, which the previous week had submitted two proposals by the National Union of Workers (UNT) and the Trade Union and Social Unit Block (BUSSCO). They proposed a 3.02% increase for the entire private sector in keeping with the formula established for these settings.

In addition, they insisted that the minimorum minimum wage, that is the one that unskilled and semi-skilled workers earn, should at least be able to cover two basic food baskets. This does not currently happen.

In addition to this proposal, another proposal by the Confederation of Workers Rerum Novarum was made which requested an additional adjustment of 2.5%.

It is in the hands now of the National Wage Council (CNS) to analyze all of the offers and see which is the best option for a wage increase for all the workers of the private companies.
