    The previous executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Costa Rican Christiana Figueres, has been nominated by the country as the candidate for the position of UN General Secretary, occupied by Ban Ki-moon until December 31st.

    The spokesperson of the president of the UN General Assembly, Dan Thomas, confirmed the news. “We received this morning a letter from the Costa Rican Government, we circulated it to the member states, and will post the relevant information on the website of the Assembly devoted to the topic, which which Figueres will be officially the twelfth candidate for the position,” he indicated.

    Figueres is an economist and analyst, and she has a broad experience in international affairs.

    The list of candidates for the General Secretary includes Irina Bokova (Bulgaria), Natalia Gherman (Moldavia), Vesna Pusic (Croatia), Helen Clark (New Zealand), Susana Malcorra (Argentina), Srgjan Kerim (Macedonia), Igor Luksic (Montenegro), Danilo Turk (Slovenia), Antonio Guterres (Portugal), Vuk Jeremic (Serbia), and Miroslav Lajcak (Slovakia).

    The General Assembly celebrates an unprecedented review process of the candidates for General Secretary, a position that has been exercised for 5 years, with the possibility of a reelection.

    The Security Council starts this month the analysis process of the candidates, for the sake of presenting a proposal to the General Assembly.
