The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The US company Apollo Endosurgery, which makes medical devices, will open a manufacturing plant in Costa Rica this year to develop products for weight reduction.
To start operations this year, they will be hiring approximately 40 people, according to a press release from the Costa Rican Coalition for Development Initiatives (CINDE).
Initially, the company will require staff in the areas of quality assurance, production, engineering and materials.
Their primary product at this facility will be gastric bypass bands that allow extreme weight loss through surgery. The manufactured products will be distributed from Costa Rica to markets around the world.
The Director General of CINDE, Jorge Sequeira, said the medical devices industry in the country is growing and the arrival of Apollo Endosurgery further diversifies the variety of goods that are produced in Costa Rica.
“Exports for the life sciences sector reached $1.9 billion at the end of 2014 and it’s expected that by 2015 medical devices will be the main export of the country,” said Sequeira.
The CEO of the company, Todd Newton, said Costa Rica is very progressive in the medical device industry and it’s a “good place to invest because of its great human talent combined with a stable regulatory environment.” (ACAN-EFE)
