A new campaign is gathering resources for the 100+ Chánguena families that were evicted last week.
The Chánguena community had been fighting off legal disputes with the land’s former tenant, Oscar Echeverria since 2001. Unfortunately for them, that fight came to a close on June 24th when the Tribunal Contencioso Administrativo authorized the eviction.
Legal as it may have been, the acts of last week were handled in such a way that left men, women and children to sleep out in the open air. While the Joint Institute for Social Aid (IMAS) has since offered to pay three months rent to help families until they are permanently relocated elsewhere, many still lack the basic necessities like food and toilet paper.
