The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – According to the NGO, Nicas Migrant, Nicaragua Women, more than men, migrate to Costa Rica, due to domestic violence.

The president of Migrant Nicas, Martha Cranshaw, said that the Nicaraguan women decide to immigrate, mainly to Costa Rica, to escape their violent partners who have a high rate of sexist, alcoholic, violent or drug addiction.

This is primarily due to lack of education, poverty and economic problems, said the leader, introducing the study “Women, Youth, Violence and Migration”.

According to the NGO Migrant Nicas, 50% of the 500,000 to 800,000 Nicaraguans living legally and illegally in Costa Rica are women.

Migration is one of the “core strategies” for survival in many Nicaraguan households, where 74% receive remittances, mainly coming from Costa Rica, according to the study.

Nicaragua received 1billion in remittances in 2012, according to official figures.

Family remittances that came to Nicaragua last year came mainly from the United States with 553.4 million dollars to 54.6% of the total, followed by Costa Rica with $ 182.6 million (18%), and Spain with 57.9 million (5.7%), among others. EFE
