A Heartfelt Welcome at the Airport

The brave personnel from the Costa Rican Fire Department (Cuerpo de Bomberos de Costa Rica) have officially returned home. The team had traveled to Venezuela to provide critical aid following the devastating dual earthquakes that struck the South American country on June 24.

Upon their arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport, the atmosphere was deeply emotional. A large group of Venezuelan expatriates living in Costa Rica gathered at the terminal to welcome the heroes. Holding banners of gratitude and breaking into spontaneous applause, the crowd thanked the firefighters for risking their lives to help their homeland.

The Mission by the Numbers

The deployment was a massive, highly coordinated effort to support a nation in crisis.

  • 64 Brigade Members: The total number of Costa Rican first responders deployed.
  • 21 Missions: The number of search and rescue operations successfully conducted.
  • 39 Seconds: The terrifyingly short window of time in which two major earthquakes struck Venezuela, causing widespread collapse in the northern and central regions.

Exhaustive Search and Rescue Operations

While on the ground, the tico firefighters faced challenging and dangerous conditions. Their specialized training was vital in executing complex tasks, which included:

  • Detailed structural inspections to determine the safety of standing buildings.
  • Thorough area sweeps across heavily impacted zones.
  • Advanced technological equipment deployment used specifically to detect and locate victims trapped deep beneath the debris.

Final Toll: According to official authorities, the Costa Rican brigade ultimately assisted in the recovery of 18 bodies trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed structures, bringing closure to grieving families.

The selflessness and expertise of these firefighters have not only saved lives and aided a nation in ruins, but have also strengthened the deep bond of solidarity between Costa Rica and Venezuela.
