The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – From November of 2012 to May 2013, 1,933 green turtles nested on Isla San Jose in the Guanacaste Conservation Area (GCA), however less than half ended up laying eggs there.

This information comes from the monitoring program conducted by biologists and staff of GCA during the last year. The program was developed with the aim of having more detailed information about the behavior of these species.

According to researchers, “Of the 1,933 nesting events that occurred, 791 ended with the sea turtles laying eggs (42.92%). The peak of the nesting occurred between December and January, which differs from information presented about other beaches in Mexico and Ecuador.”

This study identifies Isla San José as having the best conditions for nesting in Central America. The most representative group of beaches is Nancite, Naranjo, Cabuyal Coloradas and Isla San Jose.

The report also called for greater attention to the protection and control activities within the marine area, highlighting the lack of equipment and personnel in these places to guard nesting turtles.
