After it was announced that Nicaragua submitted a bill to Congress a bill for the construction of an inter-oceanic canal using the San Juan river, Costa Rica has requested technical explanations about the project.
“Nicaragua cannot hope to make a canal without asking and hearing from Costa Rica, where the rights of Costa Rica may be affected” the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
The Foreign Ministry said in connection with the construction of an inter-oceanic canal, Costa Rica would like to remind Nicaragua that they must abide by the provisions of the Boundary Treaty of 1858 and the Cleveland Award in 1888.
The statement also points out, the Government of Costa Rica 1856 that the trail has cannot cause damage to the San Juan river, and that the construction of an inter-oceanic canal on the river San Juan, means the absolute destruction of that river and the Colorado River, which itself represents a true “ecocide”.
