About 11:40 pm yesterday, Turrialba volcanic ash began to emanate. After several earthquakes, some of them felt by the population, Turrialba ejected ash that reached beyond Turrialba communities such as Coronado and Heredia.
Ashfall was more intense between 3:00 and 5:00 am, as reported by the National Seismological Network (RSN) and the sulfur smell continues to remain very strong.
According to Gino Gonzalez, RSN volcanologist, besides the eruptions from 1864 and 1866, this is the largest in the last 150 years and it also opened a gap which allows both active volcano craters become one.
Gonzalez said that prior to the 1800s eruptions, Turrialba had had similar ash and phreatic eruptions, so the giant could be preparing for a magmatic eruption (lava). (Crhoy)
