Access to healthcare is one of the biggest challenges facing Latin America, said the Pan American Health Organization (OPS).

The American body admits that there is “unfinished agenda” in the region, but that there has been a great deal progress by most Latin America countries.

Progress is made in the region that has a population of 570 million people, for example life expectancy in Latin America and the Caribbean rose from 29 years in 1900 to 74 in 2010, an improvement of four years in the last decade.

At the same time, 98% of children get to survive the their first year, when a century ago they succeeded only three out of four newborns, reported the OPS.

There is still a great deal of work in regards to diseases that must be eradicated, especially regarding outbreaks and natural disasters.

The communities most affected are the indigenous people, children, women and prisoners.

By country, the most critical situation is in Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras and Bolivia.
