The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The government of Costa Rica highlighted the progress made by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a forum chaired this year, in terms of dialogue and cooperation.

Costa Rica’s foreign minister, Enrique Castillo, held a meeting with the diplomatic corps in his country and explained that CELAC works in areas of consensus and not in the fields that divide the countries.

“The CELAC has been consolidating and already has a pipeline of cooperation among its members on important issues for the region such as education, migration, natural disasters and vulnerabilities for countries Caribbean,” said Castillo.

Costa Rica took over the annual presidency of CELAC during the Summit of Heads of State and Government on 28 and 29 January in Havana, Cuba.

Costa Rican Vice Chancellor and national coordinator of the CELAC, Gioconda Ubeda, said that the priorities of Costa Rica are boosting the post-2015 development agenda, climate change, nuclear disarmament, food security and family farming.

According to the Costa Rican government, during 2014 the country will coordinate 30 CELAC thematic meetings on production and industrial development, finance, science, technology and innovation, food security, hunger eradication and poverty, labor, environment and energy.

In addition, Costa Rica will organize and host the CELAC Presidential Summit III, in January 2015, as well as coordinate the CELAC II-European Union Summit to be held in March in Brussels, and the first meeting for the China CELAC in 2014. (ACAN-EFE)
