Costa Rica continues its quest to become the most sustainable and renewable energy country on the planet and has now powered the entire country for more than 75 days (as of the March 24th ) using only renewable energy. The country hasn’t needed fossil fuel for its energy supply for all of 2015 because of its commitment to hydropower and other renewable sources.
Costa Rica with a population of approximately 5 million also utilizes renewable energies from solar, geothermal and wind power.
Costa Rica relies heavily the power generated by water flow and river power, but in recent years Costa Rica has invested $1 billion into the abundant geothermal power available throughout the country. While geothermal energy contributed only 10 % of Costa Rica’s power last year, this number is expect to increase quickly as more geothermal system come on line.
Costa Rica has set ambitious goals in its commitment to protect its environment such as its quest to be entirely carbon neutral by 2021. Costa Rica now tops the world’s list of nations producing much of their power from renewable energy sources.
