The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) of Costa Rica has expressed displeasure with the municipalities for making the “dry law” or prohibiting sale of liquor for the presidential elections next Sunday.
According to CANATUR, the government’s decision to apply the dry law with little advance impairs sectors such as tourism and restaurants.
CANATUR president, Isabel Vargas said in a statement that the decision to adopt Prohibition for elections “is disrespectful for serious entrepreneurs who plan activities well in advance.”
“It seems irrational and archaic, but what’s even more absurd is that this Act remains at the expense of local governments, so it’s different from province to province,” said Vargas.
For his part, President Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH), Ruben Pacheco, said in the statement that “the involvement of companies is enormous and it seems that Costa Rica is backwards since it knows the importance of tourism.”
“There are extreme positions in municipalities and some have reported alcohol prohibition for two days. This involvement is generated from a lousy drafting of laws and regulations that give such power,” said Jorge Figueroa, President of the Costa Rican Chamber of Restaurants.
CANATUR is urging municipal governments who have not made the decision to apply this restriction on Election Day to eliminate the Prohibition Act.
The laws of Costa Rica give the power to the 81 municipalities to decide whether liquor prohibition applies to elections or Easter, the latter of which has a high influx of tourists. (ACAN-EFE)
