Of the 61 beaches awarded a rating by the Ecological Blue Flag Program (PBAE) only two of them, Playa Blanca in Punta Leona, and Langosta in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste-achieved the top rating of five stars.
What this means is that these two beaches are the only ones, besides having clean water and sand (equivalent to a star), also have security personnel, signage, restrooms, showers, parking infrastructure and facilities for people with some kind of disability.
Of the remaining 59 beaches, 52 achieved only one star. Three beaches (Espadilla Sur, Manuel Antonio and Playitas) received three stars and four beaches were received two.
According to PBAE 20 other beaches that applied to the program didn’t make the cut for even one star.
