Does Your Costa Rica Driver’s License Expire Before March 10? December is the Best Time to Renew

The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Authorities say you should not wait until your license expires for the renewal process since the law allows this document to be renewed three months (90 days) before its expiration date.

Under this initiative, the Director of Driver Education for MOPT, Hugo Jimenez, is asking drivers whose license expires in December, January, February and even early April, to take advantage of the extended hours until the 18th of this month in their 12 offices nationwide, so that they can take care of this situation early due to the higher demand in January.

The Director of Driver Education also explained that currently the renewal process takes no more than 15 minutes and has almost no queues right now so it’s an excellent chance for users take advantage.

The renewal is given in 6, 4 or 3 years stretches depending on the individual’s driving record. The cost is 10,000 colones, but if the user has 4 points (or less) without infringement, the value is only 5,000, giving a 50% discount for good drivers.
