Three to five hours from San José, Guanacaste presents itself as a land of contrasts, where the warmth of the sun bathes landscapes that oscillate between tropical dry forest and montane forest, in a natural setting that beats to the rhythm of volcanoes, azure rivers, pristine beaches, and a deeply rooted culture of traditions.

This province, known for its sunny climate, savannah traditions, and welcoming spirit, has evolved in recent decades to become one of Costa Rica’s most comprehensive tourist destinations. Agriculture, once the economic pillar of the region, has given way to sustainable tourism, driven by the natural beauty of its beaches and the majesty of its national parks.

National Parks:

Temples of Biodiversity. Guanacaste is a sanctuary for nature lovers, with a network of national parks that protect unique ecosystems and offer unforgettable experiences for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and connection with their surroundings.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park

Located in the Guanacaste volcanic mountain range, this park is home to a volcanic complex with nine cones and a lagoon, as well as trails that lead to waterfalls, hot springs, active craters, and areas of intense geothermal activity. The Las Pailas and Santa María areas allow you to explore everything from bubbling fumaroles to the cloud forest, offering an incomparable sensory experience.

Santa Rosa National Park

This park, the birthplace of the historic Battle of Santa Rosa, protects the best-preserved tropical dry forest in Mesoamerica. Its natural wealth is complemented by beaches like Naranjo and Nancite, nesting sites for sea turtles. Its trails also offer the opportunity to spot white-tailed deer, monkeys, and exotic birds.

Tenorio Volcano National Park

This is the source of the famous Río Celeste, whose surreal turquoise color is one of the country’s greatest natural spectacles. Rainforests, waterfalls, mineral pools, and impressive wildlife—such as tapirs, anteaters, and trogons—make this park an ecological gem.

Palo Verde National Park

Considered one of the most important wetlands in Central America, Palo Verde is a birdwatcher’s paradise. More than 280 species, including the jabiru and the scarlet macaw, find refuge in this mosaic of mangroves, lagoons, and forests. Trails and viewpoints allow for a full immersion in the biodiversity of the Tempisque Basin.

Barra Honda National Park

This park holds an underground treasure: a system of limestone caves with stalactites and stalagmites formed millions of years ago. The Terciopelo Cave is open to the public, and the view from the top of Barra Honda Hill offers panoramic views of the Tempisque Valley.

Las Baulas National Park

Located in Playa Grande, this park is one of the most important nesting sites in the world for the endangered leatherback turtle. Its mangrove and estuary system also allow for boat exploration of a vibrant ecosystem, home to birds, crustaceans, and reptiles.

Diriá National Park

Lesser-known but equally valuable, this park is home to rainforests and transition zones that protect endemic flora and fauna. Trails and viewpoints offer spectacular views of the peninsula and the sea.

Beaches, Sun, and Adventure

Guanacaste wouldn’t be the same without its famous beaches. Playa Carrillo, Flamingo, Tamarindo, Conchal, Avellanas, Hermosa, and Sámara are just a few of the coastal gems that combine white or golden sand, warm, crystal-clear waters, and perfect waves for sports such as surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, diving, or sport fishing. Many of these beaches proudly display the Ecological Blue Flag, a reflection of the local communities’ commitment to sustainability.

Guanacaste has it all: natural beauty, tourist infrastructure for all tastes, cultural authenticity, and an energy that renews body and soul. From its verdant mountains to its golden Pacific sunsets, this province is a living poem of biodiversity and good living.

Whether for an adventure getaway, a wellness retreat, or a cultural immersion, Guanacaste is that corner of the world you’ll always want to return to. Because here, nature is not just admired, it’s experienced.
