Santa Eulalia, a peaceful neighborhood in Atenas, Alajuela, became the birthplace of the country’s first Association for Integral Development (ADI) in 1968. It was a group of visionary residents who, led by Alberto Barrantes, laid the foundations for community development in Costa Rica

Barrantes was not only the Association’s first president, but also a tireless advocate for social projects that marked a turning point for the community.

Today, 57 years later, with a population of more than 2,600, Santa Eulalia remains a living example of what citizen organization can achieve.

Thanks to the ADI, the community has achieved milestones such as the creation of the Ebáis, the church, the canton’s first technical school, the CEN-CINAI, and a road network that better connects the district.

One of the most symbolic and cherished achievements is the Olaya Restaurant, a place open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., where the memory of the old hacienda that gave the town its name is honored. Beyond offering good food, every colón earned is reinvested in community projects, reflecting the spirit of solidarity that has characterized Santa Eulalia since its inception.

And the story continues. The next big dream is the construction of a sports complex that will benefit not only Santa Eulalia but also five cantons in the region. Once again, the community demonstrates that, through unity, volunteer work, and vision, it is possible to transform local life.
