Johnny ArayaThe Costa Rica News (TCRN)-The National Liberation Party (PLN in Spanish) ratified that the former mayor of San Jose, Johnny Araya, is the official candidate for the 2014 elections in Costa Rica.
The National Liberation Party General Assembly made a formal announcement about Araya´s official candidacy, who was the only candidate in the party and who according to recent surveys leads the voting intentions.
Amid hundreds of followers, Araya accepted the challenge of seeking a third consecutive presidential term for the PLN, something unprecedented in the history of Costa Rica.
Despite his advantageous position in the opinion polls, Araya assured that “there are no victorious claims” in his ranks and, on the contrary, he encouraged his followers to work hard on the campaign for the 2014 elections.
Araya also marked distance with Laura Chinchilla´s government, who is the target of all sorts of criticism and has had the least support for the last 20 years in Costa Rica.
“We obviously have different leadership skills, and there is a growing sector of the population that pays more attention to the candidate´s traits than to the political party´s,” he said.
On February 2nd, 2014, Araya will run for president against Rodolfo Hernandez of the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), Luis Guillermo Solis of the Citizen Action Party (PAC) as well as other minor parties.
Araya has highlighted the need to renew the National Liberation Party´s image, which is worn out after seven years in power, while the opposing parties try to capitalize people ´s disappointment with Chinchilla´s government.
