The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – On Wednesday, Dr. Franklin Chang announced that his company Ad Astra Rocket was ending their relationship with the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (Recope) to develop hydrogen fuel technology in the country.

The former astronaut explained that there was a significant delay in the project by Recope, which is why they decided to conclude the partnership.

For now, Recope continues the maintenance of the hydrogen plant they have in San Jose, which was built in the first stage of the agreement.

Meanwhile, the president of Recope, Sara Salazar said on Thursday morning that they were willing to continue with the second stage of the agreement, however lack of clarity in its framework is what prevented them from moving forward.

This last phase of the project, which is the part Chang claims has shown no progress, has to do with dispensing the hydrogen.

In a press conference this afternoon, Chang asked that Recope pay a surplus of $11,000 for expenses incurred by his company during the 7 month delay.

The scientist also explained that it’s not his intention to take the existing plant away from Costa Rica, however, he is exploring the possibility of continuing the project in other nations that have shown interest such as India, Dominican Republic, Panama and the United States. They also seek the support of other national organizations to complete the project.

President Solis is hopeful that an agreement can be reached to continue with the project in Costa Rica. (Amelia Rueda)
