The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – A raid on illegal cockfighting took place in Naranjo, where apparently 32 roosters were ready to fight.

The property was located in Concepción de Naranjo, opposite the American Highway where they found about 200 people participating in the illegal activity.

The officers seized the animals and the money, as well as a gun.

Apparently, some of the participants were political figures, lawyers and a deputy. However, this information has not been fully confirmed by the authorities.

    Two interventions

Antonio Vanderlucht, advocate for the legal department of the National Animal Health Service (SENASA), reported that this is the second bust this Saturday. The first was held in a property in Candelaria de Palmares.

“In Naranjo, they found a crowded stadium, there were many animals that were ready for the fight, and there were feathers, blood and injured animals. A gun and a small amount of drugs (nine marijuana cigarettes), were all found in the cockpits,” he said.

Vanderlucht added that the participants are from different social classes; there were very fine cars and the rumor that there was a deputy also reached them, but he could not confirm the information.

The lawyer explained that no one in the place revealed the name of the property owner, against whom sanctions by health SENASA will be lodged and lamented that they cannot take legal action  for animal abuse for the lack of information.
