    The Costa Rica News (TCRN) – Juan José Andrade, Director of the Police Force of San Jose, reported that they have experienced an increase in pickpockets.

    According to the Ministry of Public Security, police action is being taken to deter cases and bring them to justice.

    Celso Gamboa, Security Minister, said that they do prevent many crimes, such as theft and robbery.

    According Gamboa over 90 percent of offenders detained under this scheme are sanctioned.

    Statistical data of the security forces showed that cases of pickpocketing and small theft rose 47 percent between January and May, with about 18 arrests a day for a total of 2,814 cases that were registered, which means a total of 763 catches more than recorded during the same period last year.

    According to the police, most of these crimes were thefts, robberies shops, street assaults, injuries and reckless driving, among others.

    Most cases were reported in San Jose.  Reported cases of theft during 2013 were a total of 6,181.
