    Nicaragua’s state-run website La Nueva Radio Ya reported Wednesday that at least 13 of 200 surfers competing in the World Masters Surfing Championship from July 14-22 have been eliminated.

    Italy, Panama, the Dominican Republic, France, the United States, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Venezuela and host country Nicaragua, have all lost a competitor.

    There are 26 countries participating in the eight-day international competition hosted by Nicaragua’s Pacific coast destination Colorado Beach.

    The Tourism Ministry projects that by the end of 2013; surfing will make up to 15 percent of total tourism arrivals.

    Early this week the waves were still rolling at four to six feet at Colorado Beach, the best scores were going to the most capable tube riders. The tidal cycle is approximately seven feet, and surfers are saying conditions look good for the rest of the World Masters Surfing Championship.
