A country with wonderful virgin landscapes and a symphony of colors offers a magical experience. The country has a mosaic of natural landscapes that offer an incredible variety of flora and fauna.
The incredibly rich topography of Costa Rica stretches from the majestic forests of majestic volcanoes to golden beaches and lush jungles. A total of 1,077,308 hectares of the country is protected by national parks, forest reserves, and wildlife. It is estimated that there are 160 species of amphibians, 205 species of mammals and 220 species of reptiles found in the ecological habitats of Costa Rica.
Monkeys all over Costa Rica
No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without a monkey sighting. Home to four species of this primate, the forests offer great opportunities to observe these fascinating creatures. Listen to the monkeys’ deep howler or their call through the jungles and walks through the wood branches. The monkeys most commonly seen are the Capuchins. This monkey inhabits a great diversity of habitats that can be anywhere in the high altitude of the cloud forests of the central region of the lowlands of the Osa Peninsula. Great howler monkeys are easy to spot in the dry rainforests of Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula, while spider monkeys are harder to see because they reside in the high tops of the jungle and are found along the edges of Tortuguero. The squirrel monkey abounds in the forests of the Peninsula of Osa and Manuel Antonio.
Country of Nesting
Of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, six lay their eggs on protected beaches in Costa Rica, including extinct leatherback turtles, dolphin, green sea turtle, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtle. Major nesting sites are protected by national park systems. Conservation programs are helping to preserve wildlife in Costa Rica and ensure the continuity of its existence.
Wildlife Habitats
Costa Rica is also home to some rare species of wildlife, such as the small rodent – Paca, Agouti, Quincajú (they look like the raccoon and the weasel). Bats account for half of the mammal species found in Costa Rica. These vary in size and appearance and range from bats to vampire that is smaller in addition to being large fruit eaters. In addition to these, you can also find vultures, red barnacles, jaguars, the beautiful blue Morpho, the Fer-de-Lance viper, the anteater, three-toed sloths, wild pigs, armadillos and green iguanas throughout the region.
