    Fight Violence Against Women
San Jose Costa Rica – As a way to raise awareness among citizens about the consequences of aggression against women, the Institute of Gender Studies of Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED), the Museum of Women of Costa Rica and Banco Popular have organized the First National Photography Contest “Cero Violencia Contra las Mujeres.”

The contest aims at promoting creativity and motivating people to fight for a more equal society for women. All the works will be exhibited virtually on the website of the Museum of Women of Costa Rica.

“This is an opportunity to use art to think about the human rights violation that women experience systematically in the world. Violence against women brings consequences on a personal, familial, social and economic level; it affects not only their mental and physical health, but it also affects the growth and development of the society. The competition will motivate Costa Rican society to take an active commitment against all forms of discrimination in favor of a more equal and fair Costa Rica, “said Rocio Chavez Jimenez, Director of the Institute of Gender Studies at UNED.

People interested in participating in the contest may submit their photos from Tuesday August 7th to October 24th, 2012. Both native Costa Ricans and residents are eligible for participation as long as they meet the requirements of the contest, which are available at http://museodelasmujeres.co.cr/, and send the completed “Participation Form” to [email protected].

Photographs submitted must be related to any of the manifestations of violence (physical, psychological, sexual, economic, symbolic, etc), myths and misconceptions that contribute to maintaining the cycle of violence against women, and resources to overcome it.

However, these photographic projects should appeal to change and prevention of such acts of violence rather than help perpetuate them.

The winning photographs will be selected by a jury of international advisers: Silvana Gesualdo (Museologist, Mexico), Irene Jaievsky (Curator of the Museum of Women, Argentina), Walter Astrada (Photojournalist, Argentina), Rosa Maria Laura (Researcher and historian of art at UBA) and Monique Altschul (Founder of Women in Equality).

The winning projects will receive awards in two categories: Professional ($ 1000 first place and $500 second place) and Amateur (first place $ 250). The award ceremony will be held on November 21, 2012, as part of the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
