Lake Arenal, 22 miles long and one mile wide is a crystal clear, pristine, freshwater lake at an elevation of 1,500 feet. The lake maintains a year round temperature of 78F or 26C. Lake Arenal offers a myriad of outdoor activities including some of the best freshwater fishing in all of Costa Rica; the Rainbow bass, a fantastic eating fish, can reach 14 pounds. Waterskiing and sailing are popular pursuits on Lake Arenal and there is a local marina just two minutes down the lake road from the house where you can rent a boat or dock your own boat. Windsurfing and kite boarding in Lake Arenal will take your breath away. It is renowned to be one of the top five windsurfing locations on earth. Not only a sport for professionals, this is a sport for beginners too with equipment rentals and lessons available right on the lakeshore. Nuevo Arenal is a town and district in Tilarán Canton in the Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. It is located on the north-east shore of Lake Arenal. The former village of Arenal near the La Fortuna area was inundated in 1973 with the formation of the artificial Lake Arenal. Nuevo Arenal was a government project to relocate the displaced people. Nuevo Arenal is located about a one-hour drive northwest from the original village along a beautiful paved lakeside road that goes from La Fortuna to Tilaran.
It is connected by road to Tejona and Tilarán along Route 142. Several miles south-east are the Arenal Botanical Gardens. Arenal Botanical Gardens are rarely open anymore.
Hotel Los Héroes is one of the main hotels about 10 km east of Nuevo Arenal. There are several Bed and Breakfasts within the outskirts of the town, the most notable being Chalet Nicholas and Villa de Cary. The town has notable German and Italian restaurants, a pizza place called Moya’s, also there is a new Organic Food Store called La Farmacia Organica on the main highway across the street from Restaurant Casa Paniagua between the German Bakery and the only fuel station in the area, which is closed at the moment.
