The Costa Rica News (TCRN) โ€“ Last year, the publishing, audiovisual and advertising sectors of Costa Rica accounted for 1.4% of GDP, about $627 million, announced the Ministry of Culture.

These three sectors also employed a total of 20,707 people in 2012, up from the 18,972 jobs reported in 2010, according to program data.

The contribution of these three cultural industries to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Costa Rica, for example, is higher than banana exports (0.7), which is the main agricultural export.

Audiovisual production accounts for 46.3% of the economic contribution, 39.4% from the advertising industry and 14.3% from the publishing industry.

In the case of advertising, the investigation revealed that between 2010 and 2012 there were 5.96 million Costa Rican ads, most of them radio (2.32 million) and TV (1.74 million), while newspapers and magazines had the lowest market share, with just over 157,000 ads.

The country has a total of 596 advertising companies employing 8,151 people. The audiovisual industry, meanwhile, which includes film and video production, radio, and cable television and news agencies, generates 9,596 jobs.ย  The publishing industry of Rica employs 2,960 people.

According to the report, in Costa Rica there are 111 cinemas, mostly concentrated in the central area of โ€‹โ€‹the country and urban areas.

Costa Rican Minister of Culture, Manuel Obregon, said today while presenting the results that, โ€œWe have always been convinced, now more than ever, that investing in culture is investing in peopleโ€.

โ€œWe long to be recognized and valued for the work of many people who are engaged in the creation, production, and dissemination of cultural heritage and activities to finally demonstrate that in Costa Rica it can be thriving with art and alive with dignity.โ€ (EFE)
